What's New
We are delighted to announce the November 2008 update to both Grove Music Online and Encyclopedia of Popular Music.
Grove Music Online
In this update we focus exclusively on contemporary music, with new articles on composers as well as major revisions to existing articles. This month is also the first in what will be an annual "contemporary music update;" going forward, one of our three updates each year will be devoted exclusively to keeping Grove current with the newest scholarship on contemporary music and composers.
New and revised articles
Featured this November is a significant revision of our article on Karlheinz Stockhausen, including updated entries for the seven operas of his Licht cycle. Other notable revisions include John Adams, composer of the orchestral piece On the Transmigration of Souls, and Brian Ferneyhough, composer of Shadowtime, an opera based on the life and thought of Walter Benjamin.
We are also pleased to publish new articles on nearly 20 contemporary composers and pieces from all over the globe. Among the new entries into Grove are English composer Jonathan Dove, Australian Brett Dean, Russian composer Anatolievich Sergei Zagny, and Delia Derbyshire, pioneer of electronic music in Great Britain and composer of the theme for "Dr. Who."
Additions to Learning Resources
This update also brings with it additions to the Learning Resources section of Grove Music Online. The first of a series of chronologically organized guides to the biographical articles of the dictionary, the Guide to Women Composers provides quick access to the full list of these remarkable musicians, from the early medieval period through the present day, featured in Grove. Back by popular demand, the Sibelius Guide offers comprehensive access to the more than 500 music examples featured throughout the site.
Functional Improvements
In addition to the above new and revised content, we are pleased to announce several functional improvements to the site. Most notably, by popular demand, we have introduced a left-hand navigation bar for all Grove Music Online Works Lists, allowing for easier and more effective browsing of this valuable content. We hope that you will find that these types of changes enhance your Oxford Music Online experience, and invite you to continue to provide us with your thoughts and comments via the Contact Us form. I encourage all regular Grove Music Online users to read our Tips for Experienced Grove Users for further guidance on getting the most out of the new site.
Encyclopedia of Popular Music
Encyclopedia of Popular Music continues to grow, with this update featuring over 1800 new and updated entries. New artists include Tokyo Police Club, New Young Pony Club, Miguel Mateos, Exploding Star Orchestra, and many more.
Coming Soon
Grove Music Online will continue to flourish with our next update in March 2009. This update will focus on opera and opera singers and will feature new articles on both recent operas and on opera singers, and major revisions to existing operas. Currently underway is a second edition of The New Grove Dictionary of American Music, edited by Charles Hiroshi Garrett. All of the new and revised articles for this print work will appear also as a part of Grove Music Online. Watch for more information about this exciting project in the coming months.
